What are the Networks of
Bulldog Radio?
Bulldog Radio is a 4-star registered student organization on the campus
of Ferris State University in Big Rapids, Michigan. Our stations are
operated completely by students, from the production, to the engineering,
and everything in between. The Networks of Bulldog Radio operates two
stations, Bulldog Radio and FSU Info 530. We also offer mobile disc jockey
services to the campus and general public, which allows the organization to
operate efficiently all year long, as we are a self-funded, independent
University entity.
What kind of things can I hear
on Bulldog Radio?
Bulldog Radio airs student radio shows containing news, information,
sports, music and more, in addition to our sponsor shows of Inside the CCHA
radio (pertaining to Bulldog Men’s Ice Hockey), and Listen In with Frank
Jenks (looking for the meaning in the music we listen to). When students
aren’t on the air, our station features the 55 Minute Mess of Music,
which contains classic rock, alternative rock and the best new rock (before
most other radio stations). Bulldog Radio also provides information on
what’s going on at Ferris State University with our hourly “Things to Do at
FSU” segment, as well as commercials from Ferris departments and events.
Our newest edition to the line-up are the broadcasts of the Ferris State
University Women's Basketball games with exclusive coverage of all GLIAC
conference games.
How can I listen to Bulldog
Radio?
While we call ourselves Bulldog Radio, the “radio” in our name is more
an idea than a reality. Since the Federal Communications Commission has not
licensed any new radio stations in the State of Michigan in several years,
Ferris is unable to operate an AM or FM station. Therefore, we have taken a
non-traditional route by providing our “radio” signal on television. You can
hear the station on channel 21 on both campus cable and Charter
Communications in Mecosta County. We also provide a live 24-hour webcast of
our signal available at bulldogradio.org.
What is FSU Info 530?
More information on FSU Info 530 can be found at
www.bulldogradio.org/fsuinfo530.
How can I listen to FSU Info
530?
FSU Info 530 can be heard within a mile radius of campus on AM 530. If
you are outside the listening area, we also offer a webcast on our website.
FSU Info 530 is an FCC-licensed Travelers Information Station broadcasting
as WPHH450-AM. Content is provided by the Networks of Bulldog Radio, while
the EEET program of the College of Technology is responsible for
transmission and engineering of the station. The license for broadcast is
owned by Ferris State University and the State of Michigan.
Do you offer mobile DJ
services?
Yes, Bulldog Radio’s Mobile DJ Services are offered to campus
organizations and departments for a very low cost, as well as to off-campus
clients for a competitive rate. For more information on these services or to
apply online, visit the Mobile DJ Services page here.
Do you do any kind of mobile
broadcasting?
At this point in time, Bulldog Radio does not do any kind of mobile
broadcasting of our signal. Normally this would allow us to do remotes at
different events on campus live to our audience, but preference for new
equipment was put more toward improving our now state-of-the-art studio. The
next time an allocation proposal is given to Student Government, we plan to
include some remote equipment.
What are some of the systems
that you use to stay on the air?
Bulldog Radio broadcasts using a straight coaxial connection between
studio A, located in Masselink Hall’s Telecommunications complex, to the
head end of our cable television system on campus. The signal from studio B,
used for production and news/weather, is transferred using CAT 5 wiring in
Masselink’s network routers into studio A (our main broadcast studio). Our
signal is processed several times by high-end limiter/compressors/gates, as
well as amplifiers and effect processors by Behringer. The signal on the
cable networks is processed in full stereo sound, which allows for a better
signal than any FM radio station. To mix our audio, the console used is an
AEQ BC-300 with 8 inputs and two microphones. We use only ElectroVoice
microphones in our studios, including our main mic, the famous RE-20. We
also operate our own automation system, which contains over 2,000 songs (and
counting), as well as our commercials and special productions. Jazler Radio
Automation is in charge of our station while the students are away and not
broadcasting. We like to refer to it as being in “auto pilot” or “on
shuffle.” You know it as the 55 Minute Mess of Music.
FSU Info 530 uses the same automation system, Jazler
Radio Automation, in order to loop our program of Ferris-oriented
information every 15 minutes. The AM transmitter that operates the station
is actually a student-built kit, which has operated efficiently with the
assistance of the Electronics Engineering Technology program from Ferris'
College of Technology. When emergency messages about campus or the area need
to be relayed, a special system allows the Department of Public Safety
officials to call in and trigger a special message system that takes over
the signal and allows for the disbursement of information as soon as
possible.
Why should I listen to your
station over traditional radio?
While the Networks of Bulldog Radio are partners with our local
stations, we ask students and community members to keep in mind that we are
not here to make money; rather, we are here to entertain our listeners and
allow them to enjoy all that the students of Ferris State University produce
for them. As mentioned previously, we are a non-commercial station, so we
won’t fill our station with commercials or lame promotions. The music we
play in our 55 Minute Mess of Music is classic rock, alternative
rock, hip-hop, pop, top 40 and rhythmic hits. We’re an affiliate of ERG
Music, which gives us the newest chart-topping hits twice monthly. Bulldog
Radio also has one of the biggest collections of music with almost 2,000 CDs
containing over 4,000 songs, in addition to a collection of 1,000 vinyl
albums from the 70s through the early 90s. Our station is centered around
you, the listener, and many student shows allow for requests, so listen in!
